ABSTRACT

A three-dimensional geo-information system was successfully applied to the modelling of geotechnical data of the City of Sliedrecht, the Netherlands. The modelling consisted of creation of a spatial model which represents distribution of geotechnical units within the studied area, assigning representative values of geomechanical parameters to these units, and, settlement calculations based on the models created.

An algorithm which, on the basis of created models and user-selected geomechanical parameters calculates settlement under specified surcharge, was developed and implemented.

The results were presented in the form of geotechnical maps, namely settlement prediction maps and depth of foundation maps. For comparative purposes the same maps were prepared using conventional, two-dimensional interpolation from borehole information.

The results of this study demonstrated that in the case of moderately complex to complex geological settings engineering calculations based on a full spatial model of subsurface provide advantageous results compared to conventional two-dimensional approach.
